Now that school is finished, I'm taking time to explore places that are just too far away to have stumbled across.
First up is Coney Island. I know it's still pre-Labor Day and so most everything is closed, but I won't be around after Labor Day, so I took advantage of the time I had.
| First glimpse. |
It says to follow the crowd, but I didn't find one. Still, fun to see the famous hot dog eating contest location.
| The surrounding area isn't too great, even at day time. |
Now onto the boardwalk!
| A view down the famous boardwalk. |
| More workers than customers. |
| Lonely palm tree. No beach-goers. |
| Hmmm...maybe that's why. |
| Fancy wheel. |
| Still more workers than customers. |
| Amusement parks look gloomy when closed. |
| So do aquariums. |
| And whatever these things are. |
| Even beaches look gloomy. |
But there's at least two people who think it's a great day to visit.
| No crowds to fight, I suppose. |
| Some shops. |

| The past record holders for eating hot dogs. |
Back on the main street headed towards the subway, I found a few more interesting things.
| Why not drive in style? |
| They serve soft ice and hard cream. Huh? |
| They also serve a lot of different candy apples. |
| Old-style subway station. |
On the way out, I noticed the station still had the original BMT (Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit) signage, which means it pre-dates the city subway takeover in the 1940s.
